For 70 years, the Israelites lived in exile in Babylon. Then King Cyrus of Persia defeated the Babylonians and allowed the Jewish people to return to Israel and to rebuild their temple there. Zerubbubel, a descendent of King David, leads the first group of over 40,000. Ezra followed later and reminded the people of their covenants with God. He reminded them that God loved them and cared for them. God had not abandoned them.
